Room of the Week: A Small Space Maximized

Downsizing on space does not mean scaling down style. San Francisco design firm Niche Interiors tackled a small space, injecting it with loads of color and design.

The challenge:

The client approached Niche Interiors with the task of making her main room serve many functions. The team at Niche created an efficient floor plan that maximized the small square footage, squeezing a dining area, home office and entertaining space into one room.

The doors were removed, and a Parsons desk accompanied by a TULIP CHAIR painted bright green were arranged inside.

Arrange your space

Planning is the key to making a small space like this work, explains Niche Interiors Design Principal Jennifer Jones.

“Pay close attention to the scale of furniture pieces that you bring into your home,” she said. “Create a floor plan with rough dimensions before making any major purchases.”

Color and pattern

Not only did the client need design for a downsized space, but she requested a stylish and functional entertaining space “that reflected her energetic, fun-loving personality,” said Jones.
This meant going with a lively color palette with lots of pattern mixing.

Niche Interiors chose to go with gray, black and white, pear green and fuchsia, and kept the accents within this range.
“A limited color palette will help tie a space together, especially when you are mixing lots of patterns like we did here,” said Jones.
